Hydrocephalus is one of the major neurological ailments drawing the attention of the neurosurgeon. The estimated incidence of congenital hydrocephalus in developed countries is 0.7 per 1000 live births. 1 Surgical options for diverting the CSF flow across the obstructive pathology has been a time tested method of treating this pathology. The modalities of CSF diversion have seen major refinements over decades. Comparing the Efficiency of Two Treatment Methods of Hydrocephalus: Shunt Implantation and Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy

Introduction: Hydrocephalus is one of the most common diseases in children, and its treatment requires brain operation. However, the pathophysiology of the disease is very complicated and still unknown.  Methods: Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV) and Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt (VPS) implantation are among the common treatments of hydrocephalus. In this study, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) hyd...

Non-Tumor Obstructive Hydrocephalus Treated with Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy in Cameroon

Objective: In Sub-Saharan Africa, shunt dependence is a real threat for patients. For this reason, any method allowing shunt independence such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy should be promoted. The goal of this study was to show the advantages of neuroendoscopy in treating nontumor obstructive hydrocephalus in Cameroon. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the cases of non-tumor obstructiv...

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy for treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic third ventriculostomy has become the preferred treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus. The purpose of this paper is to present our experience with ventriculostomy at our center. METHODS Twenty-four patients underwent ventriculostomy for the treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus between May 2000 and May 2006. The follow-up period lasted between one and 51 (median: four)...

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in pediatric patients: the Canadian experience.

OBJECTIVE Reports from relatively small series of pediatric patients predominantly from single centers have hampered accurate analysis of outcome from endoscopic third ventriculostomy. We combined patients from nine pediatric neurosurgery centers across Canada to obtain a better estimate of outcome and identify factors affecting success of the procedure. METHODS Databases were recoded for uni...

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy in the management of hydrocephalus: Outcome analysis of 168 consecutive procedures.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) is the treatment of choice for obstructive hydrocephalus, but the outcome is still controversial in terms of age and aetiology. METHODS Between 1998 and 2011, 168 consecutive procedures were performed in 164 patients, primarily children (56%<18 years of age and 35%<2 years of age). The causes of obstructive hydrocephalus included tumoural path...
